On the northernmost island of the Aegean, in the green Thassos, otherwise known as the "Emerald Island". The lush vegetation, the lush forests and the deep blue seas that are found, fully justify this characterization and make the place a wonderful tourist destination. The acceptance of the beauty of the island starts from antiquity, where we find it in Greek mythology. Its name is rumored to have been taken from the brother of Europe, Thassos, who in search of his sister who had been kidnapped by Zeus, was enchanted by the beauty of the island and decided to settle permanently in this earthly paradise, forgetting the orders of their father, Aginora.

Such a fairytale place would never be missing from the Odyssey and the voyages of the famous Greek seafarer, Odysseus. It is rumored that it was its mythological port, as it is connected either with the island of Calypso or with the island of Sirens. In both versions, however, the magic of the island is emphasized and manifested in the religious beliefs of the ancient Thasians who were faithful to the twelve gods of Olympus.

This belief is manifested through the archaeological findings, which are countless and scattered throughout the island. Archaeological discoveries and excavations continue to this day that bring to light new parts of the mysterious life of the ancient inhabitants. Part of this way of life was the worship of the god Dionysus, with the Dionysian mysteries and orgies required and ordained by the priests of the temples and were inextricably linked to the consumption of wine.

Wine, since ancient times, has been a basic local product, with most of the island being covered by vineyards. The fertile soils generously gave their fruits to the local growers, giving them varieties of wine of exceptional quality. In modern Thassos, the cultivation of grapes is a secondary production, as from the 18th century onwards the olive trees have gained ground. Olive groves are a key part of the local economy, as many have as their main occupation the cultivation and trade of olive products. Its exceptional quality fruit is a recognizable product worldwide.

Thassos honey is an equally excellent local product. Honey producers bring their bees from all over Greece, to take advantage of the rich flora of the island. The pines and lush forests that cover the whole island are a source for the production of an excellent quality honey, rich in countless beneficial ingredients.

One of the greatest gifts of the place to the Thassians is the abundant water wealth that surrounds the island. Blue and hospitable waters, full of life and various species of fish are, from antiquity to the present day, a key reason for the development of fisheries. The richness of the sea offers our dish a wide variety of seafood that every visitor must enjoy. The rich composition of the sea water offered to the ancient Thasians another famous product, in its time, salt, as in the southeastern part of the island there were salt pans. The salt came from the evaporation of seawater in marble basins, carved at the ends of the mountain, by the sea. The quality of the salt was excellent, which made it world-renowned and recognizable and an exportable product of the time.

Nowadays there is no salt mining, but the site can be visited as an archaeological destination, within the settlement of the same name. The basins where the evaporation took place were the result of marble mining, a process that still occurs today. Thassio marble is unique in the world, with a wonderful off-white texture. Apart from the quality of the marble, the element that made the island particularly popular is that most of the quarries were located by the sea. This event was of catalytic importance for the economic development of the island and the spread of white marble, since the marbles were easily mined and, using hydraulic cranes, which were considered extremely advanced technology for their time, loaded on merchant ships and started their journey.

Thassos, since antiquity, has been a valuable place, both geographically and because of its products, for the entire Mediterranean. Over the years it began to be appreciated as a travel destination and to offer its visitors unique experiences. The development of the tourism industry has opened new economic horizons, not only for local but also for foreign investors, with tourism now being the largest income in the local economy. More and more visitors discover the magic of the island, with the result that every year it is a main destination for relaxation and tranquility.

In the northeastern part of the island extends the bay of Chrysi Akti and Chrysi Ammoudia, from Skala Potamias to Skala Panagia. The bay has summer residences from one end to the other, creating the feeling of a single settlement. Hotel units and all kinds of accommodation are at the disposal of the visitor and offer a wide variety of facilities, depending on the preferences that exist. At the end of the beach we find the coastal road that connects one end of the bay with the other. Along the way there are excellent taverns on the sea, folk arts for buying gifts and souvenirs, bars where you can enjoy a cool beer or quaint cafes where you can try some local variety of tsipouro with homemade handmade meze.

Of course, at the disposal of the visitors, there are also supermarkets, doctor's office, ATM and other shops with essential items. The beach is about 4.5 km long and is famous for its fine sand with its wonderful golden color, from which the two beaches got their name: Chrysi Akti and Chrysi Ammoudia. The clear blue waters are ideal for children's disorders, as they have an ideal depth for our little explorers to splash. Above the bay rises the mountainous and green mass of Mount Ypsario (Psario) and above them are the settlements of Potamia and Panagia. In the years of the pirates, the forest vegetation kept the inhabitants of the area protected from the sea invaders. The combination of mountain and sea, green and deep blue; the intensities of nature, are combined in such an absolute and unique way, that, over the years, the small picturesque fishing village became one of the most popular destinations in Northern Greece.
